Why Teaching Palantir Foundry Is Really About Teaching Forward Deployed Thinking

The Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) role did not begin as a Silicon Valley job title. The term “forward deployed” comes from the military, where teams operate close to the mission rather than from headquarters. They work under pressure, with incomplete information and evolving priorities, and they are expected to solve the problems that arise in the field.

Palantir adapted this model in its earliest years while working with intelligence and defense organizations. Because these environments often involved highly complex or classified requirements that could not be fully captured through traditional product discovery, engineers worked directly alongside operators to understand their challenges firsthand. In some cases, that meant being physically deployed close to the mission, building and iterating within real operational environments. Leaders such as Shyam Sankar helped formalize this approach, and internally the role became known as the “Delta” model.

What began as a necessity for high-stakes government work proved equally valuable across commercial industries. By staying close to the people doing the work, Forward Deployed Engineers develop a deep understanding of operational workflows, constraints, and decision-making processes. Combined with the capabilities of Palantir Foundry, this approach enables teams to build software that transforms operations rather than simply reporting on them.

That is why developing expertise on Foundry goes beyond learning individual platform capabilities. Understanding features such as Pipeline Builder, Workshop, Quiver, Ontology, or AIP is an important foundation. Equally important is learning to think like an FDE: framing ambiguous operational problems, understanding an industry, identifying where value can be created, generating testable hypotheses, selecting the right capabilities for the task, and delivering solutions that operators will adopt and trust.

At ForgeSight, we designed our training around this philosophy. Palantir provides an excellent foundation for learning the platform itself. Our program is designed to build on that foundation by helping participants develop the operational mindset and delivery approach that define successful Forward Deployed Engineers.

Our curriculum focuses on:

  • Defining operational problems through the lens of an FDE.
  • Researching industries and understanding the challenges organizations commonly face.
  • Applying statistical methods, machine learning, and AI where they create the greatest value.
  • Understanding when and why to use different Foundry capabilities, including Quiver, Workshop, Contour, Ontology, and AIP.
  • Managing delivery through hypothesis-driven development and agile practices.
  • Applying Foundry’s capabilities to solve real operational challenges across industries.

The program concludes with a real-world business case study using realistic data, followed by mock interviews and collaborative working sessions that simulate the day-to-day experience of an FDE. Participants practice discovering requirements, forming hypotheses, collaborating with stakeholders, and delivering solutions under realistic business constraints.

The people who thrive are almost always those who are genuinely interested in solving complex operational challenges. Platform capabilities can be learned, but developing the judgment, curiosity, and problem-solving mindset that define exceptional Forward Deployed Engineers is what enables organizations to realize the full potential of Foundry.

If you’re looking to develop that capability, whether for your own team or as a path into a Forward Deployed Engineering role, we’d be happy to share how we approach training. Foundry provides an incredibly powerful foundation, and pairing it with forward deployed thinking helps teams deliver lasting operational impact.
